This presentation sprouted from a University of California Master Gardener Train-the-Trainer Workshop. Doug Mandel, a Shasta Master Gardener and founder of the educational non-profit Ghost Pine Native Plant Nursery, will discuss various topics, including managing water use, nurturing the soil, practicing Integrated Pest Management, gardening to conserve energy, and encouraging wildlife. You will leave empowered with at least one idea for change in your more sustainable landscape.
Plant Talk: Fruit Tree Selection and Cultivation

This talk will be taught by Consulting Certified Arborist Rico Montenegro, a tree expert with extensive regional and worldwide knowledge and experience. In this class you will learn about fruit tree selection, IPM or natural techniques of pest control, soils, and fertilization, how to train young and newly planted trees, pruning methods that include ways to maintain fruit trees in a compact or reduced-size as well as an introduction on how to restore old, neglected and abused fruit trees. Much of this information will apply to all types of trees as well.

This talk will feature in-depth discussions on the psychological conventions that often complicate the adoption of these practices, culminating in a compelling case study of a property whose thoughtful landscaping helped it withstand the devastating 2018 Camp Fire.
